A new work made by SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts theatre performance students in collaboration with Maiko Yamamoto, WILD STATE was an all weather site-specific project, with performances taking place in the courtyard outside of the SFU Woodwards campus in Downtown Vancouver.

After 451 days lost at sea, a wayward group lands on an unknown shore. As they begin to piece together the circumstances that brought them to where they are now — as well as what will become of them in this new, unfamiliar place — one by one, they are taken.

Inspired by a large Japanese dock that washed up on Agate Beach in Oregon 15 months after an earthquake and tsunami struck the northeastern coast of Japan, WILD STATE explores the plight of the many invasive species on the dock that survived what should have been a fatal journey. Following one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history, the tsunami dock traveled 5000 miles across the Pacific, out on the open ocean, carrying over 100 different plants and animals, arriving to a hostile reception. Using this story as an analogy for layering personal narratives of invasion, xenophobia and the unnatural, WILD STATE ultimately points the finger at the most invasive species of all.
